Oli Wickham clean-sweeps Saturday at Queensland Raceway
Oli Wickham has continued to extend his lead in the Yokohama Tyre AASA Australian Formula Ford Championship by winning Saturday’s second race at Queensland Raceway.
Wickham dominated the event after an early challenge from title combatants Isaac Demellweek and Seth Burchartz.
It was Demellweek taking second into Turn 1, but Burchartz came back and took the position back.
Burchartz didn’t stop there as he took the lead from Wickham at Turn 4 and halted the switchback attempt by Wickham into the next corner.
A lap later, Wickham slid cleanly down the inside at Turn 3 to re-take the lead as wheel-to-wheel contact was made a lap later with Burchartz hitting the rear wheel of the championship leader.
It was Wickham emerging with no damage, but Burchartz slowed and dropped back in the pack.
This elevated Demellweek to third ahead of Hunter Salvatore, Jamie Rowe, Kaleb Belak, Lachie Mineeff and a charging Will Lowing in a hastily repaired Mygale.
Amazingly, Burchartz was back up to speed and matching the leader’s times, but was 12s behind Ryan DeBorre in 15th.
Burchartz’s job was made easier when DeBorre made contact with Tabitha Ambrose at Turn 4 resulting in both spinning.
The battle for the lead closed up to 0.311s as Demellweek was on the charge and was right on Wickham’s gearbox.
Lowing was continuing his charge by first taking fourth from Salvatore, then third from Rowe, but dropped back to fall behind those two, plus the rising Mineeff.
The quartet battled to the line as Rowe led Mineeff, Salvatore and Lowing.
Behind, there was a side-by-side battle falling the way of Kaleb Belak as he edged Giuseppe Imbrogno.
Brad James and a charging Burchartz completed the top 10.
The program resets again on Sunday featuring the full-field Shootout and two races starting at 10:05am AEST.
