Two from two for Kobi Williams in Sydney
Kobi Williams has continued his perfect start to the second weekend of the Formula Ford Stars Series at Sydney Motorsport Park by taking a second race victory for the evening.
Williams led home Lachlan Evennett and a storming Joe Fawcett from the back completed the podium.
It was a mammoth effort from Mike Borland’s Spectrum team to effect repairs on Fawcett’s entry prior to Race 2 after an opening lap tangle resulted in it hitting the wall.
Fawcett started from the back and was already up to sixth by the end of the opening lap battling Jack Johnson.
Evennett dropped position to Will Lowing off the start to allow Williams to build a slight margin after the first lap.
It was Evennett taking advantage of a Lowing mistake exiting Turn 1 on lap 2 to slide down the inside at the next corner and begin his pursuit of Williams.
Fawcett continued his move towards the podium by demoting Johnson then Hie to reach fourth place.
Johnson had his hands full due to Brad James and Hunter Salvatore, but the Marcos Ambrose Motorsport driver attempted a move at Turn 2 under brakes only to lock up.
The battle for third between Lowing, Jamie Rowe and Fawcett was heating up as the charge continued for the latter.
Meanwhile, Williams appeared to be in control at the front until Evennett slashed a second out of his margin as eight minutes remained on the clock. Fawcett’s charge was to end at third as the margin to Evennett was 3s.
It was a thrilling battle for the lead due to Evennett’s superior pace, but the defensive driving of Williams proved more than a match.
Despite the intense pressure, Williams was able to hold on by 1.579s after a wishbone detached from Evennett’s entry losing him time in the final two corners as he just held on for second from the battling Fawcett, Lowing and Rowe.
Hie, Salvatore, Johnson, Belak, James, Ambrose and Fitzgerald completed the field.
It’s a fresh start for the Formula Ford Stars Series drivers when practice occurs at 12:55pm immediately followed by Qualifying at 1:15pm AEST.
