Cost-effective Legend Cars

Legend Cars is a very cost-effective place to start in motor racing, bonuses are you race against a huge grid of over 30 cars every round, all while competing on live TV, it is a fantastic category for so many reasons.
Legend Cars Australia competes under the Australian Auto-Sport Alliance run, Hi-Tec Oils Super Series as well as several MRA events throughout the year.
Brett Thomas recently bought into Legend Cars Australia as an owner, and explained why he purchased the pocket-rocket series.
“The reason, the Legend Cars category is so strong, Tony Ward's done an amazing job over the last two years,” Thomas said.
“The first meeting we had under our control was at Winton, we had 36 entries and there were five or six guys away at a wedding.
“From a cost point of view, Legend Cars are amazing, it's a great entry level category.
“To give you an idea, an Aussie Racing Car, a series I also own, uses a set of tyres every meet, minimum, sometimes more. With Legend Cars these guys are running around on the same tyres, some of them use them for the season.
“Another positive thing is that quite a few drivers have the same engine in the car for three seasons. They just do a head gasket change once every 12 months as a service, as a bit of preventative and then that motors as good as the day you put it in there.”
Thomas is certain you can race a season of Legend Cars for less than a year in karting.
“One set of tyres and one motor, you go try to run a go kart for that, you can't. You just can't run a national Kart series unless you've got a budget of $120-$150,000, and to be competitive, you've got to be at the latest spec and everything else.
“Whereas Legend Cars its very competitive, but it’s controlled what they can and can't do. So, you're not competing against somebody that's unlimited pockets that can out spend you.
“These guys aren't turning up with big 300,000 transporters, they put it on the back of the ute basically.
“It doesn't matter whatever their budget is they can be very competitive in a competitive class and from age 15-50 and beyond.
“The AASA, the sanctioning body that we run under, do an amazing job with it, Stephen Whyte and Carolyn Oldano are fantastic.”
Oldano, the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series Manager expressed how popular Legend Cars are with fans and what a great addition they are to the program.
“Running costs are low, maintenance is manageable, and there’s strong value for money when it comes to seat time. It's an ideal platform for up-and-coming drivers, motorsport enthusiasts, or anyone looking for competitive racing without breaking the bank,” she said.
“AASA has always supported Legend Cars, and their place in the Super Series is all about pure, exciting racing.
“These pocket rockets bring big grids, close battles, and have quickly become a fan favourite. It’s a great way to showcase the category to a wider audience while staying true to its grassroots spirit.
“The Legend Cars paddock has a warm, family-friendly atmosphere — a real credit to the team behind it.
“While the racing is intense on track, off the track it's a tight-knit community where drivers and crews genuinely support one another. In this category, it’s not always about the win — it’s about having fun with your mates and sharing the passion for racing.”
Thomas is looking forward, excited to see where Legend Cars can go from here.
“We're just looking for the rest of the season as new owners,” he said. “Darren Allan is our general manager and obviously Tony Ward is still on board, and part of the business, who does an amazing job.
“We’re learning fast from Tony, without Tony, we wouldn't have bought it. Tony is a vital part of our business, just with his knowledge, we'd be lost without him to be honest with you.”
