Kobi Williams holds off Lachlan Evennett in enthralling Sydney finale
Kobi Williams has completed the clean-sweep in Sydney after a thrilling finale to the second weekend of the Formula Ford Stars Series.
Williams and Lachlan Evennett put on another thrilling battle for the lead, with Joe Fawcett for close company rounding out the podium for the second race in a row.
It was Williams leading into Turn 1 from Evennett, who locked a break entering Turn 2 and somehow still maintained second.
Back in the pack, Fraser Hie spun off at Turn 1 compounding a wretched weekend for the Victorian Spectrum driver.
Focus turned to the front when Evennett completed a pass for the lead at Turn 2, but Williams a lap later repeated the move to regain the ascendency. Fawcett tried to follow and just failed to demote Williams to third.
The lead swapped between the two as Evennett defended strongly against Williams especially on the front straight where the toe proved valuable.
Williams attempted to replicate his pass in the earlier race on the outside of Turn 1, but this failed and invited Fawcett to challenge the duo.
A switchback by Williams at Turn 1 set-up a successful pass for the lead entering Turn 2 and it was one he held to the end, but only just.
It was a thrilling run to the flag as Williams and Evennett ran side-by-side, with the series leader taking his fifth win for the season by 0.046s, while Fawcett was 0.311s behind the duo.
Will Lowing continued his consistent start to the season in fourth from Hunter Salvatore, Jack Johnson, Brad James, Tabitha Ambrose, Kaleb Belak, Fraser Hie and Ethan Fitzgerald after a spin.
Jamie Rowe was the only non-starter following his roll in the earlier race.
Next up for the Formula Ford Super Series is a trip to Queensland Raceway as part of the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series on June 27-29.
