Kobi Williams prevails in Sydney battle royale
Kobi Williams made it continues on his path towards a clean-sweep after taking victory in Saturday’s opening encounter, but it wasn’t without a fight.
After securing pole by just 0.014s, Williams led away after the rolling start from Lachlan Evennett, Joe Fawcett and Will Lowing.
The race-long battle began when Evennett attempted a pass on Williams at Turn 6, but although this fell short it was the next lap where the Mygale driver made the move.
Evennett finally made the move successfully and slightly kept the door ajar for Fawcett on the way to Turn 7, but Williams was able to hold onto second.
This didn’t last for long as Williams completed a daring move around the outside at Turn 1 to snatch back the lead, but a lap later Evennett responded by sliding the inside at the opening corner as Fawcett and Lowing kept in touch.
Williams this time successfully took the lead on the inside of Turn 1 only for Evennett to slide down the inside at the next corner. This continued again as Evennett defended hard at Turn 1, which sent him wide on exit and opened the door for Williams to take back the lead at Turn 2.
Drivers were achieving their fastest laps as the ambient temperature cooled when the race was entering its conclusion, but a roll for Jamie Rowe at Turn 1 led to race being neutralised until the end. Rowe was able to emerge from his Spectrum on his own and went to the medical centre for checks, but it is unlikely he will be out for the second race.
Williams led Evennett, Fawcett, Lowing and Hunter Salvatore across the line in quick succession.
Fraser Hie was next from Brad James, Jack Johnson, Tabitha Ambrose, Kaleb Belak and Ethan Fitzgerald.
The final race at the Sydney Sundown is scheduled for 7:35pm AEST live on SBS Viceland, Fox Sports and Kayo.
