Kobi Williams takes thrilling Race 2 victory at Mallala
A methodical drive from ninth to first has given Kobi Williams victory in Race 2 at the penultimate round of the Formula Ford Stars Series at Mallala.
Starting off ninth on the grid following a mechanical problem in Race 1, Williams took his time after climbing to fifth on the opening lap, before catching leader Lachlan Evennett in the closing stages.
Evennett struggled with brake balance, but thrilling battled Williams for the lead during the final laps.
In the end, Williams took a 0.212s victory ahead of Evennett and Jamie Rowe scored third.
Rowe held off the advances of Joe Fawcett for the final podium place, with the latter another to charge from the back.
After finishing second in the opening race, Will Lowing completed the top five ahead of Jack Johnson, Kaleb Belak and Brad James.
Giuseppe Imbrogno avoided an incident at Turn 1 when Ethan Fitzgerald spun after brake problems on the way to ninth.
Hunter Salvatore was as high as third before gearbox problems dropped him to 10th.
Fitzgerald and Tabitha Ambrose both had brake dramas as both retired.
Isaac Demellweek’s crew just fell short of effecting repairs caused following an incident during Race 1, but is expected to line-up on the grid for Sunday’s action.
The Formula Ford Stars Series resets on Sunday at the Mallala Masters as Qualifying kicks off the action at 8:50am ACST/9:20am AEST.
