It is set to be a breakout event for the Australian Super Tin Tops at Sydney Motorsport Park later this week, with a field of 27 cars, many series debutants and new round sponsor.
As part of the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series, the rebranded Australian Super Tin Tops Championship continues to go from strength to strength.
Plazmaman has come onboard as the sponsor for the second round of the series, designed and manufactured in Australia, Plazmaman is a huge name in the world of aftermarket performance and turbo parts.
Plazmaman has been involved in Drag Racing and Time Attack competition for a while, however the brand is branching out into the world of circuit racing with Super TT, titled this weekend the Plazmaman Super Tin Tops.
As for the new entries, well, there are over a dozen for this round, 13 newbies to the series, and they bring with them some really interesting cars.
“There are some really cool builds,” said category manager Cory Gillett. “For example Darren Steeden is entering a Ford Escort with a with a V8, it’s a beautifully built car.
“There is a sneaky little sleeper here, Nathan Findanis in a Ford EA Falcon has a Precision Turbocharger under the bonnet, which is pretty cool. He is one of the owners of the Precision Turbocharger.
“Benny Tran is entering his ultra-fast Honda Integra and will be challenging for the win, as will Matthew Giuntini well-tuned Honda Civic.
“There’s a little 1.6l turbo-charged BMW Mini driven by Graeme Draper, it's just a variety in this class now, the variety is the winner here.
“That's what our category has, that no other category has is the variety. It's all one or two makes, or one or two sort of designs, ours is basically anything goes, and it has somewhere to fit in.”
Along with the debutants, all of the regular front runners have also entered making up the impressive 27 car grid this weekend. Competitors are coming from far and wide to compete to race in the series.
“There are so many newbies entering the category, but we must also note the ones that are putting in the effort, like Tony Saint and Daniel Natoli that are traveling quite a distance,” Gillett said.
In the off-season the series went through a class restructure which has been crucial to the resurgence.
“We've now got four classes, Supreme which is 2.2 litres and down, Super Six, which is basically a saloon car category, Ultimates which is our 2.2 to 4.4 litre class and Outlaw for 4.4 up to 7.0 litres,” he explained.
“The category is going to make a hell of a noise coming down the straight at Sydney, I’m sure of it.
“We’re definitely trying to head in the right direction, and I think acknowledging your first, second and third place getters in each class helps.
“But focusing on the race craft, the door-to-door battle regardless of class, and the camaraderie the pits, it’s a real family environment.
“We take the barbecue, we burn some snags and have a bit of a laugh about what happened that day.”
