Oli Wickham bounces back to win tense Race 2
Oli Wickham has taken his seventh win of the 2026 Yokohama Tyre AASA Australian Formula Ford Championship after a tense encounter in Sydney.
Wickham dropped to third at stages as first Isaac Demellweek, then Will Lowing held the lead before it was the championship leader with two laps to go holding the ascendency.
A chaotic start resulted in Lachie Mineeff, Jett Leicester and Sam March making contact at Turn 2, then Rio Campbell spun on the crest over the tunnel as Will Hickey took to the grass on the outside.
The Pace Car was required to collect the Formula Fords littered around the circuit.
A restart occurred on lap 5 and Lowing made his move by passing Hunter Salvatore around the outside of Turn 1, which led to also taking second from Wickham approaching the second corner.
Lowing was fighting his Mygale as it fishtailed around the circuit, but wasn’t letting Demellweek get away. A great exit onto the main straight set-up a pass down the inside at Turn 1 by Lowing on Demellweek to give the local driver the lead.
Lowing, Demellweek and Wickham were battling hard, but clean in tough conditions in a true showcase of Formula Ford racing.
However it wasn’t to last when Demellweek slid down the inside of the leader at Turn 8 though the switch back gave the advantage to Lowing until the final corner when he spun off and in all of this Wickham led the way.
Wickham withstood the pressure from Demellweek to take the win as Lowing recovered to eighth.
Seth Burchartz rounded out the podium ahead of career best result for Brad James, Giuseppe Imbrogno, a stunning recovery from Jamie Rowe delivered sixth, with Lowing losing a position on the line to Kaleb Belak.
Another to lose position during the race was Hunter Salvatore, who finished back in ninth from Xavier Henderson.
Tabitha Ambrose and Ryan DeBorre completed the drivers on the lead lap, while March was the only driver to continue following the opening lap skirmishes.
Campbell, Mineeff, Hickey and Leicester all failed to finish.
The Yokohama Tyre AASA Australian Formula Ford Championship begins again at 10:30am on Saturday for the warm up and Shootout Qualifying session leading into Race 1 at 5:25pm, then the finale at 7:45pm.
