Sydney Sunset Showdown Day 1 wrap
It was action aplenty at Sydney Motorsport Park yesterday for Round 3 of the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series, the Sydney Sunset Showdown.
It was a wild day with rain regularly lashing down on the circuit throughout, action started on track at 8.30am and continued well into the night with the final on track action concluding at 10.30pm.
There were eight categories on show headlined by the TA2 Muscle Car Series.
TFH Hire Legend Cars
It was a busy day for the TFH Hire Legend Cars Australia Championship with no less than three races, including the inverted grid affair.
Race 1 was taken by Ruben Dan, with his teammate and the team owner of CXC Racing finishing in second.
Dan snuck past Thomas towards the end of the race and won by 0.5s, while Thomas was left to fight for second. He beat home Josh Craig, Robert Hogan and Jamie Craig.
Josh Craig took the Race 2 honours while the battling was fierce behind, most notably with Dan and Hogan colliding at Turn 8 midway through the race spinning them both out of contention.
Craig beat Thomas by 2.2s, with Chais Tippett in third, and Jamie Craig fourth. Hogan finished 28th and Dan 31st.
The final encounter saw the top 12 finishing order in Race 2 inverted and resulted in a lot of lap 1 action.
It ended with a historic Craig 1-2, with Josh leading home Jamie. Thomas finished inside the top three, ahead of Tippett. Hogan recovered to eighth and Dan to 15th.
TA2 Muscle Car Series
The TA2 Muscle Car Series delivered plenty of drama and two different race winners, Nash Morris and Ben Gomersall.
Race 1 saw an incident at Turn 2 with Hayden Hume running into the back of Ben Gomersall, Hume sustained major damage and was forced to retire. Gomersall spun and had to recover from the back of the field.
Out front making a cameo appearance in his Mustang, Morris greeted the chequered flag first.
Hot off the back of winning the Tag Team Enduro, Alice Buckley finished second ahead of Joel Heinrich, Tommy Smith and Tyler Cheney. Gomersall recovered to eighth.
At the start of Race 2 Gomersall made great early progress and continued to march forward, he went on to take the race win by 2.7s from Morris.
Heinrich and Smith tangled when fighting for third, Heinrich rounded out the podium ahead of Buckley, Smith was able to finish fifth despite the spin.
Formula RX8
Formula RX8 was dominated by championship leader Stiaan Kriel, who set fastest lap after fastest lap all day long.
He won Race 1 by an impressive 11s from reigning champion Matthew Boylett, Geoff Connell and Toby Waghorn.
Kriel was even more dominant in Race 2 taking victory in the 10-lap race by a staggering 32s.
Boylett, Connell, Waghorn and Anthony Cafiso were locked in combat in the scrap for second position.
In the end Boylett prevailed ahead of Waghorn and Connell, while Cafiso fell off the train late on.
Hankook Australian Drivers’ Championship
The Australian Drivers’ Championship crowned a brand new race winner, with Kalen Chin taking two victories.
At the start of the year Chin had never heard of the category, and in just his second weekend in the series he scores his first two race wins.
In Race 1 he beat home Lucas Stasi and Rocco Spinley, while pole sitter Harry Strik spun at Turn 1 and finished 11th.
Race 2 saw Chin prevail by a margin of 12.7s from Stasi, Luke Klaver in his return to the series finished Friday with a third.
Australian IRC Series
The Australian IRC Series had just the sole sprint race on Friday, with Hi-Tec Oils Motorsport driver Lee Stibbs taking the win after a brave move around the outside at Turn 1.
Stibbs took the win by 11s from the returning Geoff Taunton. The Queenslander held off both Danny Stutterd and Geoff Emery at the end of the race. Emery had to recover after starting the race from the back of the field.
Jake Donaldson won the invited class in his Porsche 991.1 GT3.
Game Over Australian Endurance Championship
The Australian Endurance Championship had just two practice sessions today in very wet conditions.
At the end of the day Jake Camilleri and Walker in their Mercedes 240IX ended up at the top of the timesheets by a margin of over 2s.
Jamie Arratoon and Luke King finished finished the day second in their Mercedes GT4, with John Nikolovski and Fabian Coulthard rounding out the top three.
Sports Compact Neon Lights powered by Exedy
It is the first time that Sports Compact has joined the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series, and boy did they deliver plenty of action.
Nic Jones in his Volkswagen Scirocco took the win in Race 1 from Linda Devlin and Tim Maynard and Kurt Macready.
The dryer conditions suited the Silvia of Macready more, despite a slow start he was able to take the win, nipping past Jones on the penultimate lap.
Maynard rounded out the top three once again as championship leader Devlin did not start Race 2.
