Kobi Williams dominates opening race, Lachlan Evennett charges through in Queensland opener

Kobi Williams has dominated the opening Formula Ford Stars & Renegades race at Queensland Raceway, but Lachlan Evennett charged through the field to score second.

While Williams took a lights-to-flag victory, Evennett put Qualifying behind him to limit the damage as best as possible to charge through the field to second from last  on the grid.

It was an even jump from the rolling start as Jamie Rowe put up an early challenger to Williams during the opening laps, with the pair skipping out to a comfortable margin back to the chasing pack.

A thrilling race-long battle for third proved entertaining between Will Lowing, Joe Fawcett, Brad James, Hunter Salvatore and Fraser Hie.

Lowing and Fawcett consistently swapped positions in a clean fight for the final podium slot.

Enjoying his best run of the season was James in fifth ahead of the battling Salvatore and Hie.

Evennett soon joined the duelling quintet and was able to move through all five entries to mount an attack on Rowe for second.

A mistake by Rowe at Turn 6 on the penultimate lap led to a trip into the gravel trap allowing not only Evennett, but Lowing and Fawcett back through as he scored fifth.

In the end, Williams took victory from 1.688s from Evennett, Lowing, Fawcett and Rowe.

Rounding out the top 10 were Salvatore, James, Hie, Tabitha Ambrose and Jack Johnson.

Ethan Fitzgerald and Andrew Torti rounded out the field.

Evennett’s charge sets up a thrilling scenario for the second race of the weekend at Queensland Raceway, with Williams expected to come under more heat.

Race 2 of the Formula Ford Stars & Renegades Series will commence at 3:35pm AEST live on SBS On-Demand, Fox Sports and Kayo.
