Kobi Williams holds off Lachlan Evennett challenge in thrilling second race

Kobi Williams has answered every challenge from Lachlan Evennett to win the best race of the season so far at Queensland Raceway.

In a thrilling race-long dice for the lead, Williams made the decisive move on the penultimate lap on Evennett to extend his winning streak to sixth as Jamie Rowe rewarded his hardworking team to complete the podium.

Race 2 of the weekend lived up to the promise as the lead duo of Williams and Evennett swapped the lead regularly throughout the 20-minute encounter in a continuation of their war waged in Sydney.

Williams won the start from Evennett, but he was challenged early by Will Lowing ensuring the series leader skipped out to a small advantage.

Lowing’s form faded as he dropped position to Joe Fawcett and Jamie Rowe in quick succession

It was Rowe continuing his charge to take the final podium spot from Fawcett, but this allowed Evennett and Williams to build a margin between the two pairs.

A gearbox problem forced Tabitha Ambrose into retirement, though she is expected to be back for Sunday’s full program.

The quarrelling duo of Evennett and Williams soon had company courtesy of Rowe, Fawcett and Lowing closing in to make it a five-way fight for the top spot.

Hunter Salvatore was not far behind the leading pack until he ran wide at the final corner for the second time and this time hit the signage on the outside of the kerb leaving a piece lodged in his front suspension arms.

Evennett continued to lead from Williams, but Rowe was now a concern for both the leaders as he made a challenge for the race win.

However, the local driver was unable to hold on thanks to a penultimate lap pass from Williams and the series leader was able to hold on to score his sixth victory in succession, but faced his most serious challenge yet.

Rowe held onto third from Fawcett, Lowing, Brad James, Ethan Fitzgerald for his best finish of the season so far, Fraser Hie, a recovering Jack Johnson after a spin and Andrew Torti.

Salvatore and Ambrose were the only drivers failing to finish the race.

It’s a reset for the Formula Ford Stars & Renegades Series on Sunday, with Qualifying at 10:25am AEST and will be featured on the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series livestream.
