Lachlan Evennett breaks through for maiden Formula Ford Stars Series victory

Lachlan Evennett has broken through to take his maiden Formula Ford Stars victory on home turf at Queensland Raceway by the barest of margins.

Evennett reversed his fortunes from Saturday to complete an audacious pass around the outside of Turn 3 on series leader Kobi Williams on the final lap to score the victory by just 0.050s.

Completing the top three and a constant challenger to the leading pair was Joe Fawcett, but he was unable to complete a pass on Williams to further demote the series leader.

Evennett was up for the fight from the start after jumping straight into his Mygale from the previous TA2 race and pressured Williams from the start. It took effect when Williams ran wide exiting Turn 5, but Evennett was unable to take advantage.

The duo were barely separated throughout the race, duking and swapping positions in a repeat of Saturday’s second race.

It was Evennett completing a last gasp pass around the outside of Turn 3 holding on to the win, despite challenges by Williams at Turn 4 and a drag along the front straight.

Fawcett had the best seat in the house, but had Jamie Rowe for company after a late race resurgence from Saturday’s third place finisher.

Hunter Salvatore continued his consistent run in fifth after a sustained battle with Rowe for the remaining spots in the top five.

A moment at the start of the race for Ethan Fitzgerald failed to harm his path towards his best result of the season so far by scoring sixth ahead of the recovering Will Lowing after a problem in Qualifying forced a rear of grid start.

Brad James, Fraser Hie, Jack Johnson and Tabitha Ambrose all fought for the remaining spots in the top 10.

An impressive job by the crew of Andrew Torti got him back on the grid after an incident in Qualifying as the local driver rounded out the field.

One more race remains at the 2 Days of Thunder for the Formula Ford Stars & Renegades, which is scheduled to start at 3:45pm AEST.
