Super Tin Tops open to MX5s
The burgeoning Australian Super Tin Tops Championship will enjoy a welcome addition to the ranks from the next Hi-Tec Oils Super Series round at Queensland Raceway when the Mazda MX-5s join the grid.
The Mazda MX-5s will compete under the Australian Super Tin Tops Championship banner, but in its own class adding to the five others already represented within the category, which includes the Super Sixes for V6-powered saloon cars.
“They're going to have their own class,” said Super Tin Tops owner Denis Pana. “It will be its own championship within the championship. Whatever points they accumulate over the year will go towards their Drivers’ Championship.”
Paige Raddatz will lead the Mazda MX-5 class in the Australian Super Tin Tops Championship, with Pana hoping this new agreement will allow the category to flourish as it has done internationally.
“There is a good series in New South Wales but outside of that, there are many MX-5s sitting around, with nowhere to run,” Pana said. “So, we're giving them a platform to come out and enjoy their cars in a national series with TV coverage.
“It's a good platform for us to promote and show what the MX-5 are all about. MX-5s around the world have got a great following, and we want to boost and improve that following here in Australia.
“It's always good racing and if you see what they do overseas, we want to emulate and copy that here in Australia, we will have some big news coming over the next couple of months of what we're doing.
“I love the MX-5s, the opportunity has come around, I've got a platform where I can put these cars on a national level and make it grow, I've always believed that there's so many MX-5s in this country and they want somewhere to race, but recently just not had anywhere to do that.”
The Australian Super Tin Tops Championship is one of the fastest growing categories on the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series bill and the addition of the Mazda MX-5 Class is due to only continue this trend.
The 2 Days of Thunder at Queensland Raceway represents Round 3 of the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series schedule on June 27-29.
