Will Lowing using overseas experience to build Formula Ford campaign

Will Lowing has been a consistent performer during the inaugural Formula Ford Stars Series and using his previous overseas experience to continue his rapid driver development.

Scoring a podium each at both the opening round at Winton and on home turf in Sydney, Lowing sits fourth in the standings 20-points behind third-placed Lachlan Evennett.

It’s rare for drivers in a development category to bring international experience, but Lowing ticked this box at the age of 16 when he contested the famed Formula Ford Festival in the United Kingdom.

It proved a valuable lesson for Lowing.

“I was lucky enough to get a lot of support to get over to the UK when I was 16,” Lowing recalled.

“I learnt a lot over there for my race craft. They race super, super hard over there and there is not a backward step in terms of racing room or even contact. It toughened me up a bit and it was a cool experience.

“It’s been good.”

Lowing made it to the Semi Finals of the 2022 BRSCC Formula Ford Festival, but is now focusing on his renewed local attack at Queensland Raceway, which is a circuit he has never been to before.

“I’ve never been to Queensland Raceway, so it will be a learning experience,” explained Lowing.

“I’ve driven it on the sim, but I’ve never actually been there and I think it will be fun. It’s always fun going to a new circuit.”

The focus for Lowing at the remaining rounds of the season is to close the gap to the top three.

“I always want to be competitive, so I’m always aiming to win and I’m pretty happy to have scored a few podiums, but there is still a bit of a pace difference to the top three compared to myself,” he summarised.

“I want to get closer to the top three by fighting for podiums and even wins.

“We’re still working on that and hopefully we’ll have a good round at Queensland Raceway.

Set-up changes at Sydney Motorsport Park proved a revelation for Lowing and now he will be targeting improved efficiency in qualifying at Round 3.

“I’ve been trying to get the most out of my qualifying as it’s hard due to the tyres giving us just two laps to get it right while at an optimum level,” Lowing said.

“I’ve been trying to move forward in my qualifying performances, so we’ll see how we go at Queensland Raceway.”

The third round of the Formula Ford Stars Series joins the 2 Days of Thunder meeting at Queensland Raceway as part of the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series on June 27-29.
