Will Lowing takes dominant maiden victory as title contenders endure mixed fortunes

Will Lowing has won his maiden Yokohama Tyre AASA Australian Formula Ford Championship race in dominating fashion at Sydney Motorsport Park.

It proved a race of mixed fortunes for the title contenders, with Jamie Rowe and Seth Burchartz completing the podium, while Oli Wickham was seventh as the worst befell Isaac Demellweek.

Lowing started well off pole and bought Demellweek with him on the way to Turn 1 as Burchartz slotted into third.

The fight at the front between Lowing and Demellweek was tight leading to the duo breaking away from the rest of the field until an engine problem emerged for the latter.

After rolling wide and through the grass exiting Turn 4, Demellweek dropped multiple positions as he dealt with an engine cutting out.

This elevated Jamie Rowe and Seth Burchartz following a swap of position at Turn 2 during the earlier stages.

Wickham was struggling to make ground in the mid-pack, losing then gaining and eventually dropping position to Lachie Mineeff after running wide at the final, which also allowed Sam March through.

This came after Hunter Salvatore had also provided an earlier challenge to Wickham, but he ran wide on the exit of Turn 1 to fall off the pace temporarily.

In the end, Lowing withstood an immense pressure to take his maiden victory to go with his first pole achieved earlier in the day.

Rowe enjoyed a return to form in second ahead of Burchartz, a charging Salvatore, March, Mineeff and Wickham.

Brad James continued his good run of results in eighth to hold off Giuseppe Imbrogno and Rio Campbell.

Demellweek still managed to limp home 11th ahead of a smokey Xavier Henderson, Kaleb Belak, Tabitha Ambrose, Jett Leicester, Will Hickey and Ryan DeBorre following extensive repairs were undertaken after a crash during the Shootout.

The final race of the weekend in Sydney is due to commence at 7:45pm AEST live on SBS Viceland, SBS On Demand, Fox Sports 507 and Kayo Sports.
